Here's what you'll need to complete this tutorial:
PhotoImpact 8. You can download a trial version HERE
(This can also be done in PI 7)
You'll need the SpiroFX filter by DC. You can download that HERE.
Install the filter to your plugin folder.

Let's get started.

1. Open a new image 400x400 with a BLACK background.

2. Go to "Effect", "DCSpecial", "SpiroFX". Use these settings (make sure Gradient and Spiro boxes are both UN-CHECKED):
SpiroFX Settings

3. Select your magic wand with these settings:
Click in the large black area in the upper left-hand corner of the image.

4. Go to "Selection", "Similar" with these settings:

5. Now go to "Selection", "Invert". Next go to "Edit", "Trace", "Selection Marque". Accept the default settings. Change the Mode to 3D Round:

6. Go to the Material Gallery and apply the Gold Gel Preset (G07). Deselect by clicking on the black background.

The next few steps are how I created my image but you are more than welcome to use a different preset other than the gel or vary your colors.

7. Grab your magic wand with these settings (make sure the "+" is selected.

Select the first four areas on each side (I've highlighted the area's in red to show what to select).

With the areas selected, go to "Edit", "Trace", "Selection Marque". Accept the default settings. Change the Mode to 3D Round and apply the gold gel preset you used for the butterfly's wings. Deselect the area by clicking on the black background.

8. Continue to select areas that you want to fill and repeat the steps above until you have something like this (leave the last few areas open):

9. Select your path drawing tool. Shape= Ellipse, Mode= 3D Round, color= Gel preset G19 (gray).
Draw an oval for the body, click on your transform tool- rotate freely mode and rotate the body slightly to the left.
Draw a smaller circle for the head, move this layer under the body.
Next change the path drawing tool to the Line and arrow tool, Freehand shape, 3D Round mode, gray gel preset as before. Open your material options and the border setting should be "2", depth setting is "30". Draw 2 lines for the antenna. Change back to your path drawing tool, Ellipse shape, 3D Round mode and draw a little circle at the end of each antenna. You can change the gel to whatever color you'd like. I used the gold.

10. On your layer manager, select the 2 lines of the antenna and the 2 circles and merge as a single object. Move this layer under the head. Go to "Object", "Shadow" put a checkmark in the shadow box and accept the default settings. Deselect.

11. Go to "Edit", "Fill" solid color white or any other light color. Wow, that made the butterfly just jump out didn't it? LOL.

12. Right click on your layer manager and "Merge All". You're done, add whatever frame you'd like to finish it. I hope you've enjoyed the tutorial :)
